Really great example of how to think about LLM use cases. Thanks Rafe!

I've been playing with custom GPTs at work that let you provide extra context by providing the GPT with a specific set of resources during configuration.

I set one up as a tool to help ICs understand the Competency Map. If you ask direct questions that can be answered by the included export of the Map, it does a really good job. ICs on my team have found this useful because it offers a slightly different wording of competencies which encourages them to think about the meaning behind the competency, not just the exact wording. It also does a surprisingly good job explaining how an IC3, for example, can broaden their approach to a solution to demonstrate IC4 competencies.

Another GPT I made includes the Competency Map as well as articles about creating and refining SMART goals and examples of them. So far this seems like a really powerful encouragement for ICs to take ownership of their career growth.

In all cases I frequently remind folks to check statements for accuracy and use the output as a starting point for a conversation with their manager.

On the management end I think tools like this, rather than replace growth conversations with my reports, will instead make them much more productive. Managers spend many more hours thinking about competencies and growth than ICs (on average). Tools like this are a bit like Tutors, giving ICs much more efficient ways to think about their growth and absorb the path described by the Competency Map.
